SPOTLIGHT: Megan Johnson-Rox

Megan Johnson-Rox

1 - What is your professional background, and why did you become a coach?

I’ve been a communication instructor in higher ed for the past decade. 5 years ago, I came upon an opportunity to get trained and certified. I just got my ACC last year. I love helping people with interpersonal relationships at work and in their personal lives. I’m fascinated with what causes misunderstanding and conflict and enjoy leading group discussions around this and bias. My coaching skills have helped me in many areas of my career and personal life.

2 - How did you choose your specialty area?

I’ve been drawn to study group dynamics, interpersonal relationships, personality types and human behavior and enjoy watching people interact and helping people communicate better. It seemed to naturally lead to helping people develop around relationships and conflict in the workplace. The past few years I’ve focused my work around diversity, inclusion, conflict and unconscious bias, and career coaching.

3 - What are the greatest challenges and greatest rewards of your career?

Working with people, relationships and team dynamics is always challenging because there’s often a new, unique challenge that comes up because humans are complicated, dynamic beings. The greatest reward is leading team conflict management circles, watching them discover a profound realization about themselves and/or their team-mates and watching the conflict resolve and healing happen. I also love meeting new people and learning their stories and feel honored to become part of their life journey.

4 - How do you enjoy spending your free time?

I like writing and playing music, spending time with my 5-yr old son, doing crafty stuff (I’m currently learning how to weave a wall tapestry), and binge watching tv series (Outlander!).

5 - What is something that most ICFTN members would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m the front woman of a synth/pop-rock band, Scale Model.

6 - What is your favorite quote?

Marianne Williamson, "As we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence actually liberates others."
