The Power of Being in the Room

Why Professional Development Is More Than a One-Time Event

By Pam Reaves, PCC

There’s something powerful about being in the room.

Not just physically—but being present in a space where learning is happening in real time. Where conversations unfold, perspectives are shared, and something shifts… sometimes in ways you didn’t expect.

As coaches, we often invest in professional development through courses, credentials, and structured learning. And while those are essential, growth doesn’t come from information alone.

It comes from engagement. From reflection. From application over time.

That’s where the real power of being “in the room” lives.

More Than Attendance

It’s easy to approach events as something to attend—another session on the calendar, another opportunity to learn something new.

But the value of professional development isn’t simply showing up.

It’s in how you show up.

Are you present, or are you just listening? Are you curious, or just collecting information? Are you connecting what you’re hearing to your own coaching practice?

The most meaningful growth often happens in the moments between the content:

  • A question that lingers longer than expected

  •  A perspective that challenges your usual approach

  • A conversation that helps you see something differently

These aren’t always planned—but they are where development begins to take root.

Learning Happens in Layers

Over the past three decades, the coaching profession has continued to evolve, but one thing remains true:

Growth as a coach doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens in layers.

You hear something once, and it resonates. You hear it again later, and it makes more sense. Then one day, in a real coaching conversation, you apply it and that’s when it becomes yours.

This is why professional development isn’t a one-time event.

It’s practice.

A rhythm of learning, reflecting, engaging, and returning again, and again…if necessary, each time with a little more awareness than before.

The Role of Community in Growth

There’s also something that happens in shared spaces that can’t be replicated alone.

When you’re in the room with other coaches:

  • You hear how others are thinking

  • You’re exposed to different coaching styles and approaches

  • You begin to normalize both your strengths and your challenges

  • You realize you’re not the only one navigating uncertainty, growth, or refinement.

And that matters.

Because development isn’t just about improving skills, it’s about deepening confidence, expanding perspective, and continuing to evolve your identity as a coach.

Turning Events into Development

If professional development is a practice, then events become more than moments—they become part of your growth process.

As you engage in upcoming ICFTN Chapter meetings and Co-hosted events, consider:

  • What am I bringing into this space?

  • What am I noticing about how I’m listening, thinking, or responding?

  • What is one insight I want to carry forward into my next coaching conversation?

Growth doesn’t require you to take everything with you.

Sometimes, it’s just one shift. One awareness. One intentional adjustment.

A Final Thought

The power of being in the room isn’t just about proximity to learning.

It’s about participation in your own development.

Over time, those moments, those conversations, those reflections, those small shifts—begin to shape how you show up as a coach.

Not all at once. But gradually.

And that’s where meaningful, sustainable growth lives.

Reflection Prompt: As you think about your professional development this month, ask yourself: How am I choosing to engage—not just attend—the spaces I’m in?
